BEART INSPIRED
Our friend Scott rang and asked if we’d work up his ’72 Combat. (Of course we would!) It came to us with some period cafe features, but it needed lots of love, and wasn’t completely in his vision. Many conversations on aesthetics were had, and Scott was continually drawn to the famous green Manxes built by Francis Beart in the late ’50s. Discussions about the philosophical differences between ’50s era bikes and ’70s era bikes ensued; often we see folks “caff’ing” their later bikes with early Featherbed trim and it’s hard to get it right – mixing metaphors. Our mission was to build his Commando with all the right stuff on the inside, give a not-so-subtle nod to Beart with the “Ludlow Green” chassis and custom features on the outside, while working with a very decidedly Commando-framed machine. When we rolled it down off the lift and took it for some serious test-riding, it was clear this was a very special machine. Wowsa!
