1972 COMMANDO COMBAT
There’s nothing more seductive than a badass Norton Commando Combat. Yet there’s also no other Norton with the darker reputation!
This ’72 Combat came to us in boxes, and Ray, its owner, was naturally concerned about the grenade hidden inside. Our charge was to get in, get the engine up to spec, do some machining to get the oil scavenge in place, fit roller NJ306 main bearings, do a full spec NYC Norton engine rebuild, and add some good breathing. We skimmed and ground the brake and fit Ferodo pads with a 13mm master cylinder. My goodness does this bike snort! The CNW electric start is a no-brainer. The aesthetics were kept stock(ish) with the addition of our fork yokes so Ray could play with steering geometry a bit. What rolled off our lift is a very usable, rideable, comfortable, reliable British Classic Norton Commando Combat Roadster 750cc.
It is refreshing to see such a tidy, clean example of Norton’s classic Commando in its factory trim.
