1971 RACER-S
Ben Schmitt’s Commando S-Type Racer – a Commando build that with such a crazy back story we don’t have enough space to tell it here. Fortunately BikeEXIF did a wonderful piece on this one, and you can read all about it here: www.bikeexif.com/nyc-norton-commando-s-type
The shorter story – Ben wanted a race bike to dip his toe back into the field. If the racing thing didn’t pan out (it did), he wanted to be able to convert the bike back to street trim. Simple enough. As we got deeper into it some very racy components were fit while keeping it adaptable, and what resulted is, without question, the most gawked at and photographed bike in our paddock. From humble (ratty?) beginnings to the swan. It’s a fast machine, we keep the motor clean.
